Chevrolet Equinox Battery Replacement: A Comprehensive Guide

Welcome to my automotive channel. In today’s video, I will demonstrate how to remove and replace the battery in a 2013 Chevy Equinox. This tutorial is applicable to Chevy Equinox models manufactured from 2011 to 2017.

The battery in the Equinox is located under the front hood, just under the PCM (Powertrain Control Module), the main vehicle computer. Although there is a bit more work involved than usual, it’s a doable task and you can do it yourself without having to take your vehicle to a shop.

First, remove the black cover from the PCM by sliding it to the right. It’s essential to push onto the black tap to lift it over and then slide it to the right to remove it without breaking it. Once the cover is removed, proceed to remove the PCM by unscrewing the 10-millimeter screw and sliding it aside to gain access to the battery.

Prior to removing the battery and disconnecting the terminals, it’s important to remove the battery holder on top of the battery. One side of the holder is screwed under a plastic cover, so you’ll need to remove this cover by taking out three plastic trim screws.

Once the plastic cover is removed, you’ll have access to the screw holding the battery holder. After removing the screw, lift the holder off to gain full access to the battery and disconnect the terminals.

Always remember to disconnect the negative battery pole first, followed by the positive, to avoid any potential shorts. When installing a new battery, connect the positive first, and then the negative.

When disconnecting the terminals, use a 10-millimeter socket or wrench to loosen the nuts, then wiggle and lift off the cables. If the battery terminals are stuck, you can use a flat screwdriver to pry them from underneath or tap them with a hammer to loosen them, taking care not to damage the terminals.

Once both terminals are disconnected, the battery can be lifted out and removed. Follow the reverse process to install the new battery, and make sure to tighten the terminals securely.
