Honda Odyssey Oil Leak: Identification, Causes, and Effective Solutions

Hey, what’s going on guys, Pete with Auto Repair Tips! In this video, I’m working on a 2005 Honda Odyssey van. The customer’s complaint is about an excessive amount of engine oil leak coming from the right-hand side engine compartment. In this video, I’m going to show you a common problem all these vans have. Let’s get into it!

The biggest problem that all these Odysseys have when it comes to oil leaks is the oil filter housing. In fact, the dealership stocks seven of these gaskets in stock. To get to the oil housing, you’re going to move the splashy out of the way. It’s just held on with a clip up under the frame rail. You’ll bend it back, and that will expose the oil housing. There are three 12 millimeter bolts that hold that housing on.

Once you get the bolts out, the housing will just slip out. The skill level on this is going to be somewhere between a one and a three. Your biggest thing is to make sure you have a way to jack it up safely.

Here’s why these things leak. There are just three bolts that hold it on. Over a period of time, the gasket gets hard, dry, and brittle, allowing fluid to leak out. To replace the gasket, you’re going to use a pick to pry it up, clean it off with brake clean and clean the block area. You don’t want to contaminate any oil. After cleaning, start the engine and watch for leaks.

That’s it for this video. Appreciate you watching! Catch you later!
