How to Replace the Thermostat and Thermostat Housing on a 2016 Jeep Renegade
Today, we’ll be replacing the thermostat, thermostat housing, and the temperature sensor on a 2016 Jeep Renegade with a 2.4-liter engine. The process will be done at home with basic hand tools. The part was purchased from Rock Auto for $74, and it comes with the sensor built in.
To begin, we need to remove the engine cover by unscrewing a 10mm bolt and popping it off. Then, we’ll proceed to remove the radiator hose, which requires using a dental pick to pull back the clip and carefully wiggle the hose off, making sure to have a drain pan underneath to catch any coolant. Next, the coolant reservoir and battery will need to be removed to gain access to the thermostat housing.
Removing the battery involves using a Phillips and a 10mm wrench to detach the clips and bolts holding it in place. The battery tray will also need to be removed, revealing the thermostat and housing underneath. This requires taking off hose clamps and using a 3/8 to quarter-inch adapter with a 10mm quarter-inch socket to reach and remove a bolt located behind the thermostat.
Once these steps are completed, the thermostat housing can be removed, and the new one can be installed by sliding it into place. After reattaching all the components that were removed, the car should be checked for leaks and the coolant reservoir may need to be refilled. The process ensures the proper functioning of the engine’s cooling system.
After the replacement, the car should be driven to normal operating temperature for approximately 30 minutes, with the heating and air conditioning systems tested. A thorough check for leaks and any warning lights should be conducted to ensure the successful replacement of the thermostat and associated components.
